know the word strategy can sound a bit... fluffy and theoretical. 

So today I want to take you behind the scenes of a real project I worked recently, so you can see what building a smart, practical marketing strategy actually looks like.

This isn’t theory. It’s not a template. It’s what happens when an organisation rolls up their sleeves and gets intentional about who they’re talking to, what they’re saying, and why it matters.

When the team at the Victorian Roller Derby League rolled (sorry/not sorry) into our first session, they had a solid strategic plan… but their marketing wasn’t keeping up.

They weren’t short on passion, talent, or programs.

What they were looking for was clarity. On how to make their goals happen from their audience, what to say, and how to get the biggest bang for their marketing buck (with a nonprofit-sized budget).

So we got to work.

We mapped their audiences in granular detail. During this process, we identified some really unique positioning and really helped distinguish 'their' members. We got super clear on what actually motivates people to show up, sign up and stay - what they want and need. 

We reframed their brand story (no more "Australia’s premier roller derby league", it became a story about belonging, confidence and community). We created tailored strategies for programs, designed with their actual audiences and goals in mind.

For each key program, we mapped it to the specific audience avatar and the parts of the brand story that resonated with them the most.

Here’s what happened next...

  • $200K in new grant funding (Play Our Way)

  • $9K Stronger Communities Grant

  • $10K private donor

  • $12K+ extra revenue from increased program sign-ups

  • +30 new participants and juniors already registered

Not to mention new brand voices, engaged committees and a team that finally feels like they’re rolling in the same direction.

And the best bit?

Their marketing isn’t just “done.” It’s working—because it was built to align with their strategy and audience from the ground up.
