Social media rules I break (on purpose) š
Sep 09, 2025
There’s a lot of advice floating around about what you should be doing on social media.
Post every day.
Use 30 hashtags.
Jump on every new platform or trend.
Be on TikTok. Or don't. Or do again.
Film everything.
Go viral.
Do it all.
I’ve heard it. You’ve probably heard it.
And I’m here to tell you: some of these rules need to go.
So, here are a few I gladly break—and the ones I never mess with.
Rules I Ignore Completely:
1. “You have to post every day.”
Nope. Not if it burns you out. I’d rather see 2-3 strong, strategic posts a week than 7 rushed ones.
2. “You need to be on every platform.”
Hard pass. Be where your audience is. Not where your board member think you should be.
3. “Just boost the post—it’s easier.”
It’s also way less effective. Ads work best when you use proper targeting inside Meta Ads Manager (and yes, I’ll teach my Training Vault students how).
Rules I Always Follow:
1. Strategy before content.
If you don’t know why you’re posting, don’t post. Random content = random results.
2. Track what’s working.
Even basic data can tell you what to do more of—and what to ditch.
The truth is, there’s no one-size-fits-all playbook. But there is a smarter way to work.
If your feed feels a little all over the place, or your team is burning time on things that don’t move the needle, it might be time to rethink the rules.
And maybe write a few of your own.
Talk soon,
Alecia
P.S. Inside The Training Vault, I help you get clear on what actually works for your audience—so you’re not just following rules, you’re following a plan that fits. [Join here]
