No. The most powerful word you have.
Sep 30, 2024Let's talk about the word that's been my autoimmune-warrior superpower: No.
For many of us, saying no can feel uncomfortable, even guilt-inducing. We worry about disappointing others, missing out on opportunities, or appearing uncommitted.
However, when living with an autoimmune disease, saying no isn't just about boundaries; it's about survival. It's about choosing rest over relapse, self-care over superhero complex.
It's about giving myself permission to prioritise my health without guilt or explanation.
I've gotten a lot better at this lately. I am much more selective on the work I do, and the way I help my community.
Because, let's face it, when your body's waging war on itself, you can't afford to waste energy on things that don't truly matter.
But you don't have to have an autoimmune disease or some big reason to protect your own time and energy. You too can embrace the magical power of the word no.
Say no to adding another social media platform, if the ones you have aren't kicking goals yet.
Say no to posting every thing your team asks you to do, if it doesn't fit with your strategy.
Say no to those unrealistic deadlines.
Say no to taking on even more tasks outside of your expertise - without any additional help.
Say no to that in person meeting when a phone call will suffice.
Say no to taking on every speaking event or opportunity.
Say no to sacrificing your own wellbeing or happiness.
Even learn to say no to yourself, when you need to. Because we can sometimes be our own worst 'yes-people'.
Remember - saying no is not a sign of weakness or selfishness. It's a powerful tool for self-care and self-preservation.
It's also the key to better outcomes and strategies. Because 99% of the time when you say no to something, you're actually saying yes to focusing your energy and attention on the one really important thing.
More time for an important thing means more success in the long term.
Hope this makes you think,
Alecia
